The word companion comes from the latin roots com- (“with”) and panis (“bread”), with its origins meaning someone who you broke bread with. Breaking bread is one of life’s simplest, yet greatest pleasures. Whether we are hosting friends and family or enjoying a more intimate moment, we believe this experience should always be romanticized. In 2019, as we were doing just that on our patio at home, the idea for Companion was born.
We began dreaming of a space that served amazing coffee and pastries during the day, a buzzing dining room at dinner service with regeneratively-grown wine, an intentional menu with everything made from scratch, rotating with the cycles of the sun. We pictured a neighborhood spot with the chatter of locals and the bewilderment of strangers who stumbled in and were treated like family. The cornettis and bolognese tell just as much of a story as the shelves full of travel relics, records, and wine bottles. As we listened to music on the patio, we closed our eyes and heard the needle drop on our favorite records mid-service. We took out a notecard and scribbled the words friend, companion.
We have taken our time honing our craft as baristas, cooks, wine enthusiasts, servers, runners and hosts. Five years later, we are ready to share companion with you. A neighborhood café and restaurant focused on simplicity, regenerative organic coffees and wines, sustainably sourced ingredients and a familial dining room.
